Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'New Era' for NYC in Inaugural Address
On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.
A Historic Mayor
The young political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating Political Headwinds
The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past comments.
Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.
