"Any idea when you're speaking to the Haim sisters?" an inquiry reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their path doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy nominees.

Similar to the greatest groups, they're a inseparable trio. Their visuals often depict them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such boundless exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the ultimate honor. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire people to form a group."

Award Milestone

The trio are speaking from home, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the award.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the nomination resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record emerged from a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics follow departures and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I adore summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in ignoring the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That newfound toughness called for a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The band's candor inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating horror stories.

One man left Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their position in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an worldwide following.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their top commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
