MHA Voice Actors Reflect on an Heartfelt Final Season: 'I am Kind of a Weepy Mess'
The long-running anime series My Hero Academia has finally concluded, leaving fans with a deep feeling of emotion that goes deeper than the on-screen narrative. This superhero saga has always been greater than a simple story; it's a rite-of-passage story about hope, perseverance, and the true meaning of heroism in a challenging world. The eighth season drives these central ideas to their breaking point, as the students of U.A. High faces the aftermath of the villainous uprising and a society teetering on the brink of collapse.
For a whole audience, the series, which debuted in 2015, served as their introduction to anime. From its explosive debut to its poignant finale, it defined the genre for nearly a decade. Its end truly marks the close of an era. If you find yourself shedding a tear during the series finale, know that you are in plenty of company. The English dub cast experienced those very same feelings, pouring raw sentiment into their recordings for the closing seasons.
Saying Farewell to a Defining Chapter
"It was such a wonderful thing to see this final season weave together all these story threads into this massive, heartfelt release for these heroes," stated one actor. "And to be involved in that, in that moment, portraying the characters, is truly moving."
The difficulty of the farewell isn't solely due to the plot. My Hero Academia became a major part in the lives of its cast, and with its conclusion comes the ending of an era they have been part of for years.
"Just as a human being, for whom this has been a daily reality for the better part of a decade, even if the line I'm saying is not overly sentimental, if it’s just my character being himself, every time I finish a session, I become a blubbering wreck because it's over. I’m not ready," admitted another seasoned performer.
Favorite Moments from the Last Season
Despite portraying their own iconic roles, several actors still have beloved characters beyond their roles, figures whose personal journeys affected them just as hard on an personal level.
"What that’s surprised me so far in my watching of the last episodes is how many characters are making me cry," said one actor. "Whether that be the Symbol of Peace's battle at the very beginning of this season, the Erasure Hero, [even] Aoyama made me tear up this season!"
The actors behind the brotherly hero-and-villain duo were also swept up in the heartbreak of their complex relationship, especially during the siblings' clashes across the recent seasons.
A Simple Question
"Just a couple of days ago, a fellow actor delivered a line as Shoto that, really, if you took it out of context, it’s a simple line, it shouldn't affect anyone, but he poses a question to his sibling a question, and the way it was delivered was so authentic and beautiful," remembered one actor. "It influenced the read I gave. I love my colleagues, they’re so talented at this, and I cannot stress enough that I’m so lucky."
Another actor agreed wholeheartedly, clarifying that the apparently minor line originates from a brief, funny scene introduced earlier, one that is completed in the finale and lands with devastating emotional weight.
"Jump ahead to the last episodes, when they’re visiting, and [the character] says, 'Wait, I need more time'," the actor explained. "Yes, it was just a way to try to connect. It was just a question, but within the story, it's all-encompassing. It's love, acceptance, remorse..."
"... and penitence," finished the other, voice thick with emotion. "Those brothers should’ve been able to speak like that."
